Kirnberger’s third volume of keyboard exercises
resembles in many respects the second. It is of medium
difficulty, presenting pieces that require definitely some
accomplishment of the performer. There are four movements
from Handel suites and several paired dances, the latter not
as truncated suites, but as movements tied to each other
without interruptions. These paired dances are explained in
the preface as possible parts of a larger suite of ballet
music, when augmented by several dance movements from
Krinberger’s prior volumes. The Alle
breve by Johann David Holland (1746–1827) is a
nice fugue, with, manual and pedal markings, although fully
playable on a single manual only. Holland, 17 years old in
1763, must have been a pupil of Kirnberger at that time.
